Get your oils and put them on!

I started thinking back to when I first got my starter kit. I remember opening it up, so excited to finally see what all this “hype” was about. I remember taking the caps off each of the oils one by one and smelling them. While I was going through each oil I remember thinking, well that’s not exactly what I thought that oil would smell like. Realistically, I’m not sure I had a clear idea of what to expect. Like many who are new to using essential oils, I noticed these oils didn’t necessary  smell “great”.  My next question was “now, what?”. So I have these oils, and I have no idea where to start. This is where I strongly encourage all that are new to using oils to reach out to whoever introduced you to these gems and ask questions! We were all there once; often times that person has wealth of knowledge & resources that they can point you in the right direction.

I became a part of a couple Facebook groups where you can virtually ask any question and receive answers (feedback / opinions) from others who use these oils as well. Many great resources are found within those and tons of people who are more than willing to share their experiences and insight into essential oils. At this point, I became really interested in the details of what essential oils are and how they work.

One of my favorite essential oil gurus is Lindsey Elmore, PHARMD, BCPS. She provides really great education on essential oils. Take some time to check her out! She put together a book called Essentials: 50 Answers to Common Questions about Essential Oils. This is a really great resource that gives the reader a short answer and a long answer to each common question that is addressed in the book.

What I’ve come to realize and what I think it ultimately my favorite part of the oils, aside from their healing properties, is how a single oil can be used in a multitude of different ways. I think I’ve mentioned it before on my Instagram (@essentiallyaligned) but I’ll say it again because it’s so true: the really neat things about these oils is how much of a personal journey they become! You have tons of resources and recommended uses, which are great; but at the end of they day the way an oil works best for me may not work as effectively for you. That’s okay!! You find the oils you love in certain times and you use them. For example, when I want the happiest, most relaxing environment in my house I have Lavender and White Angelica in the diffuser. There is no right and wrong, there is only whatever you want it to be. It’s freeing and it’s great!
